Jonathan Tomlinson reports on his recent two week hosted trips to the Minnivallalaekur and Big Laxa Rivers in Iceland…….
Well that’s another fantastic trip to fish for Iceland’s wonderful wild brown trout over for another year and as always we weren’t disappointed. We started off visiting the Minni which has become famous for producing wild brown trout into double figures every year, needless to say it isn’t a numbers river but it is the place to realistically catch a PB and possibly that fish of a lifetime. The weather wasn’t our friend and fishing was tough but the group still managed fish to over 6lb’s which anywhere in the world would be regarded as a serious specimen!
The second part of the trip saw us drop off the first party and pick up the second half and head up to the big Laxa. A mighty river that many would find daunting, is home to fish that average over 2lb’s and with hatches of midge so large they are measured in tonne per day, its no wonder the fish fight so hard. The Laxa is quite a contrast to the Minni with our group ending up with over 200 fish for just 4 days of fishing with almost everyone coming to a well presented dry fly. This was again a fantastic trip which offered the chance for a monster and also to fill your boots on numbers. This is rapidly becoming one of the highlights of my fly fishing year and I cant wait to get back there again next year!
