Fly Fishing Christmas Island – Client report

Mat

I promised a short note that you might put on the web site on Christmas Island – here’s some text and photos.

Thanks for arranging my recent trip to Christmas Island.  An excellent couple of week’s fishing.

Going with Mike Marao is always good, a top guide and the flexibility that private arrangements give, not being tied to the way the lodges do things, makes for more mixed fishing.  having your own boat is a big plus, offshore chasing sailfish in the mornings and then back for bonefish after lunch.

As usual lots of bonefish  – a few nice big ones, but mostly smaller, but always plenty to cast at.

And lots of offshore action.  Not that many big tuna around, but plenty of smaller (10-20lb) skipjack and yellowfin, which are just great on a fly rod.  But it was the bigger stuff that was best – both sailfish and wahoo were plentiful and hungry!

And as always on Christmas Island lots of other species, loads of decent trevally – bluefin, GT, dusky and goldens – and lots of other species on the flats and over the reef.  My species count for the trip was 22 different species landed!

I’ll be back for another trip, maybe next year!  Let’s getting looking at those tide tables for full moon and springs – that’s when the sails come out to play.
