Australia, a vast continent of streams, rivers, estuaries and lake systems has understandably some fantastic freshwater fly fishing opportunities on offer. From central New South Wales to the Victorian high country on the east coast, there are numerous blue ribbon brown, rainbow and brook trout rivers to explore.
This also includes chasing native species such as the Australian Bass and iconic Murray Cod which sits on top of the food chain. Famous lakes such as Eucumbene hold very big Trout, while in Victoria, the western lakes district and goldfields are home to arguably some of Australia’s best stillwater trout fisheries.
The coastal estuaries in Victoria such as the Nelson, Bemm River and Mallacoota Inlet systems also provide fantastic opportunities to target Mulloway, Estuary Perch and Black Bream which are a great challenge on fly.
The jewel in the crown, however, for freshwater fly fishing enthusiasts would have to be Tasmania. Home to the World Fly Fishing Championships in 2019 and the first introduction of Trout into the Southern Hemisphere.
Tasmania has many famous rivers such as the Esk and Meander while the Great and Western lakes systems provide some of the best sighted trout-fishing in the world.

Located less than an hour from Melbourne, Millbrook Lakes is Victoria’s premier private stillwater fishery with access to over 20 lakes for the fly fisherman.
Marysville & Rubicon Valley
Located within two hours drive northeast of Melbourne in the Great Dividing Range of Victoria, the Marysville and Rubicon Valley regions are home to some outstanding fly fishing and idyllic sub-alpine scenery.
Bemm River / Sydenham Inlet
Magnificent Bemm River and the receiving Sydenham Inlet is one of Australia’s most productive estuarine fisheries, with arguably some of the best Black Bream and Estuary Perch fishing in the country.

Nestled in the Meander Valley at the gateway to the World Heritage listed Tasmanian Wilderness, Driftwater is perfectly positioned as a base for accessing this magnificent fly-fishery.
