Blanket Bay originally sprung from its owner’s love of fly fishing and is designed to provide a world-class experience for the most demanding and experienced anglers. Situated close to such iconic rivers as the Greenstone and Caples, which are just minutes away by helicopter, as well as numerous rivers on the West Coast.
There is a large variety of water, slow moving pools, fast runs and riffles, bush-clad streams, open river floats, or small mountain lakes which provide exciting options for your fishing. You can fish near the lodge in local rivers and streams, or you may prefer to fly-fish the lake banks, or the mouth of the rivers that flow into Lake Wakatipu.
Trout up to ten pounds have been caught just close by the lodge. Lake Wakatipu is home to Brown and Rainbow Trout and Landlocked Quinnat Salmon. The fishing season on the rivers runs from November through to May. There is excellent nymph-fishing during the early season and superb dry-fly and nymph-fishing during the summer months. Brown and Rainbow trout average more than three pounds, with five to six pound trout not uncommon. Trophy size Trout over ten pounds in weight are more likely in early or late season. Fishing on Lake Wakatipu is available all year round.
Passport with minimum six months validity and photo ID to purchase fishing licence. A Visa is not required Australian, European Union, the US and countries with a visa waiver agreement.
Various international flight options to Queenstown, Christchurch or domestic flights from Wellington or Auckland. Transfer to the lodge from Queesntown takes 40 minutes to Blanket Bay or via Helicopter from any major airport.
