Laxa in Adaldalur, ‘Big Laxa River’

Known in Iceland as the ‘Big Laxa’, the Laxa River in Adaldalur is home to some of the best opportunities Iceland has to offer for fly fishing wild Brown Trout. Salmon fishermen can also enjoy fishing for wintered Atlantic Salmon that can reach weights of over 20 pounds.

In addition to large Brown Trout and Salmon, the Laxa River also has a decent population of other fish species. Leading Trout fisherman Paul Procter sums up this incredible fly fishing destination perfectly by labelling it “the best wild Brown Trout river in Europe”.

· RAUDHOLAR LODGE

The Raudholar Lodge is located on the middle beats of the Big Laxa. The lodge offers accommodation for around ten anglers in twin-bedded rooms with en-suite facilities. The lodge is fully serviced and has a comfortable lounge and dining area. There is also a boot-room to dry your waders and gear out before the next day and a sauna to relax.

The food is a mix of locally cooked gourmet dishes using seafood and a variety of meats. Basic and comfortable, this is a fisherman’s lodge. Travelling to the fishing each day is by 4WD vehicles. The local guides know the river intimately and will help put you on the fish.

WIFI is available in the lodge but you will need to bring your own laptop or tablet.

· HOF LODGE

Hof Lodge is located on the banks of the Myvatnssveit section of river. The lodge offers full board accommodation and is a basic but comfortable lodge with shared bathrooms, jacuzzi and wifi.

WIFI is available in the lodge but you will need to bring your own laptop or tablet.

· OTHER ACCOMMODATION

When fishing below the dam, accommodation is in local farm stays and B&Bs.

Located in the north of Iceland there is a large number of Trout beats divided between three sections of the river: Upper called Myvatnssveit, Middle called Laxardalur and lower below the dam at Bru. All three sections offer a diverse mix of Trout habitat with the upper and middle sections providing twenty miles of Trout fishing paradise.

The upper section is braided and has a great mix of pools, fast runs and pocket water. The middle section is wide and shallow and may appear quite daunting when first viewed but a slow approach will soon find you noticing the delicate rings of rising Trout. The section below the dam, while not as famous as the upper two sections, provides great dry fly fishing at very reasonable prices. Catch records show over three thousand Brown Trout landed on the upper two sections each year and another one thousand below the dam shows how prolific this river is.

The Atlantic Salmon fishing on Laxa in Adaldalur is equally as famous. The big mutli-sea winter fish that run this river often mean that the Big Laxa records the largest Icelandic Salmon each year. The consistent flows from Lake Myvatan at the top of the catchment mean water conditions rarely impact a week’s fishing. The river is fished by twelve rods and is suited to twelve to fourteen foot rods and traditional small Icelandic flies. Typically the river averages between eight hundred and twelve hundred fish per season.

Fly Odyssey offers prime weeks from June through August fishing the various beats on Big Laxa. We run hosted groups with Paul Procter and also can assist with individual and private bookings on this river. We also offer private guided trips with some of Iceland’s best Trout and Salmon guides.
