One of the best Salmon fisheries in Iceland, The West Ranga River provides no shortage of opportunities.
Anglers can experience fishing with both double and single-handed rods, as well as enjoy excellent ‘hitch’ fishing for Salmon towards the end of the season.
In a perfect spot overlooking the home pool, the river’s lodge can accommodate up to 20 rods, dependant on the time of the season.
Approximately two hours’ drive southeast of Reykjavik, lies the recently refurbished lodge at the West Ranga river which now offers eighteen twin-bedrooms all with en-suite facilities. Each full rod will have its own room and there is the possibility to share a rod on the river.
In the main lodge, there is a comfortable lounge with plenty of room to relax, a bar and a dining-room which overlook the Homepool. There is plenty of room for your fishing gear and equipment.
WIFI is available in the lodge but you will need to bring your own laptop or tablet.
The West Ranga is regarded as one of the best, if not the best, Salmon rivers in Iceland. Thanks mostly to a smolt releasing programme the river produces a consistently high number of Salmon each year with an average size in the six to nine pound range. There are bigger fish caught each year, twelve to twenty pounds and occasionally one or two over twenty-five pounds.
The river is spring-fed and therefore the water remains clear through the season and has a very consistent but cold temperature and flow. The river is classed as medium to large and can be fished with a single-handed rod however we would suggest that a double-handed rod would be a better choice, teamed up with a floating line and range of skink tips to get the fly down fast in the colder water.
Between fourteen to twenty anglers can fish the river depending on the part of the season and runs of fish. Fishing is usually with one guide to two anglers. The river is fished by wading which is generally quite easy and all the pools on the river are easily accessible by car and some walking.
As with all the Icelandic rivers being prepared to vary techniques, fly size colour, speed of retrieve and depth of fly will generate the best results.
Bring chest-waders, warm undergarments, a water and wind resistant jacket, cap or hat and polarized glasses to see the fish as well as providing protection for your eyes. We would also advise that you take a midge net.
Passport with minimum six months validity and photo ID to purchase fishing licence. No Visa required.
