Nestled away in Southern New Zealand’s World Heritage Fiordland region, Fiordland Lodge offers incredible views of Lake Te Anau and is the ideal base to explore this beautiful region.
When it comes to fishing, the Fiordland area has no shortage of world-class Brown and Rainbow Trout, with more than 40 streams to choose from ranging from spring creeks to large freestone rivers.
The lodge also offers fly-in and multi-day camp-out trips.
Located in the deep south of the South Island, Fiordland Lodge is on an elevated terrace overlooking the south Fiord of Lake Te Anau and tucked away from view on the road to Milford Sound. It is one of New Zealand’s finest luxury lodges. Opened in 2002, Fiordland Lodge caters for the discerning visitor, offering fine dining, ten guest-rooms all with commanding views across the lake and set on nineteen hectares with the natural environment all around you.
A variety of accommodation is available from executive lodge suites and rooms, all with en-suite facilities and spectacular views, to log cabins suited to families and small groups.
Fiordland Lodge partners with local farmers, cheesemakers and other talented artisans, to create a dining experience that is unique to the area, both on the plate and in the restaurant. Guests will experience a connection to the land through dishes that ‘focus on freshness, simplicity, and seasonal flavours’.
From the lodge, there are countless outdoor wilderness activities that range from fishing to guided hiking and jet-boat tours on the lake and into Fiordland.
WIFI is available in the lodge.
Fiordland and the southern regions are world-renowned for quality fly fishing. The crystal-clear unpolluted waters are managed as a wild fishery, producing good stocks of large Brown and Rainbow trout. Fiordland Guides specialise in upstream sight-fishing and all fishing is ‘catch and release’.
The lodge offers access to over forty un-crowded rivers and streams. They vary from small spring-fed streams to moderate sized rivers.
Experience true wilderness fishing amongst stunning scenery on remote rivers in Fiordland. There are optional helicopter fly-ins direct from the lodge, or you can try back-country fishing on rolling New Zealand farmland.
During settled weather, the rivers run clear and large Brown and Rainbow Trout can be seen cruising in deep pools. Away from the mountains and forest, the rivers flow across farmland with an ever-changing landscape. Access along the river banks is somewhat easier than in the mountains and good stocks of both Brown and Rainbow Trout abound.
Tuition is available for the less experienced and we would advise that this is booked in advance along with your guide. The lodge guides will provide everything that you need from waders to rods and flies. However, you are welcome to bring you own gear. Rods in the 5-6# 8’6 -9ft are ideal with reels loaded with plenty of backing as there are some big fish out there. Fly lines should ideally be dark to avoid spooking the fish. Layered clothing is the best approach and the colours should blend to allow for a stealthy approach.
A typical day starts from 8:30 or 9:00am until around 5:00pm. The maximum number of anglers per guide is two. Lunch and drinks are included in the full day and taken streamside along with mid-morning snacks and breaks.
Passport with minimum six months validity and photo ID to purchase fishing licence. A Visa is required for non-Australian and NZ citizens.
There are various international flight options to Wellington, Auckland or Christchurch. Domestic flights can be arranged to Queenstown and then drive or heli-transfer to the lodge.
