Tongariro Lodge

One of the longest running lodges in New Zealand offering a variety of accommodation options, Tongariro Lodge is in a prime position for some of the best trout fishing opportunities the North Island has to offer.

With a diverse fishing program that ranges from backcountry fly-out and camp-outs through to drift fishing, you’ll truly be spoilt for choice all year round, including dryfly fishing in summer and trout fishing in winter.

Situated on the banks of the Tongariro River, the lodge offers fly-fishermen excellent access to winter Rainbow Trout.

Tongariro Luxury Lodge is located in beautiful park-like grounds on the banks of the legendary Tongariro River on the southern shores of Lake Taupo, at the foot of New Zealand’s outdoor playground – the world heritage Tongariro National Park. Separate private chalets and villa guest-accommodation are situated within the twenty-two acres of beautiful lodge grounds. There are three accommodation types available for guests, each with private facilities and their own secluded sunny terrace with views of the Tongariro River or mountains beyond. All rooms are serviced daily and include free WIFI. You can choose from a two- to five-bedroom villa, an executive villa with four bedrooms or a one-bed chalet. Facilities include dryer, coffee and tea, fridge and TV

The main building has rustic lounges, comfortable sofas, open fires and Trout-fishing Trophies of the past adorning the walls. There are two pleasant dining-rooms. Non-fishers can also enjoy an all-weather tennis court and a secluded spa pool, rafting, hiking and skiing in the winter. The food and fine wines offered are a mix of traditional and game reflecting the surrounding area.

WIFI is available in the lodge.

The Tongariro Lodge guides provide access to over forty rivers and three Lakes. They offer the most diverse range of Rainbow and Brown Trout fly fishing opportunities in New Zealand. Fishing is accessed by 4WD and there is a large variety of water within a one-hour drive of the lodge, however, for the more adventurous there is Heli-fishing and overnight camp trips and wilderness raft trips.

Each year Trout of over ten pounds are landed but the average size for Lodge guests is four pounds. This area is a truly vast fishery that can provide the Trout fishing experience of a lifetime, all year round to the beginner and the expert alike.

The lodge runs its own rafts, four-wheel-drive vehicles and boats. Most of the fishng is walking and wading and there is access to some of the best back country nymph and dry-fly fishing for sighted Browns and Rainbows to be found anywhere. The helicopter access options offer truly remarkable fishing, but are by no means essential.

We suggest anglers bring their own favourite fly rod and reels, along with rubber-soled wading boots and Goretex waders. Tongariro Lodge guides can provide all flies and leaders and a wide variety of equipment.. A weight 5 or 6, 9ft fly rod covers most situations with a 7/8 outfit for larger rivers, lakes and winter fly fishing. A typical day runs from between 8:30 to 9:00am until 5:00pm approx. Lunch is included in the full day and taken streamside. Layered clothing is the best approach. Clothing should blend and allow for a stealthy approach
