The Hawaii island of Oahu, which translates to ‘the gathering place’, is well-known for its stunning beaches, incredible surf breaks and breathtaking mountain ranges.
With an array of fantastic resorts, villas and activities to enjoy it’s a great holiday destination in its own right, while also home some of the largest Bonefish found anywhere in the world. While challenging, the average size is typically 5lb+ with shots at double-figure trophy fish commonplace typically travelling in singles or pairs.
Perfect for half-day or full-day guided excursions, you will be fishing from a tailored flats skiff and at times on foot, fishing hard flats with a mixture of seagrass and coral, which is the perfect habitat for Bonefish to feed on with the movement of the tide. A typical day will see 15-20+ good shots, with very experienced professional guides.
Fly Odyssey can tailor your holiday to the region or in transit through the Pacific, including accommodation, activities and private transfers to the fishing grounds each day. All gear is provided meaning that there really are no organisational requirements on your behalf – just turn up and have a great time!
Waikiki Beach and Oahu have a great range of beach-side accommodation options with great access to the beach, dining and bars and entertainment options. Including the Prince, Halekulani and Four Seasons Hotels to B&B and resort accommodation your stay in Hawaii and Oahu will be one to remember.
For the non-angler, there is a huge range of activities to enjoy including walking around historic Honolulu, surf breaks at the north shore, walks around Makapu’u Point, helicopter tours, high-end shopping experiences, scuba diving, pearl harbour or simply relaxing on one of the many beautiful beaches.
After being collected from your accommodation in the Waikiki/Honolulu area, the day typically starts with a short boat ride to the local flats. Here, you have the opportunity to spend some time wading or fishing from the comfort of the skiff, in depths from eight inches to three feet deep.
On the flats, there is a range of different species of Trevally available, including GT’s known locally as ‘Ulua’, Blue Trevally – ‘Omilu’ and Golden Trevally- ‘Pa’o Pa’o’. Conditions can be challenging as with any other saltwater fly fishing destinations, with strong winds seasonally, however, the beauty of island life means that there is always shelter to be found behind the spectacular mountains which form your backdrop each day.
Visibility is typically very good, allowing you to sight the fish or be put onto them while boating the flats, edges and drop-offs.
Seasonally, May to October is the summer period. The days are usually in the mid-20s with ‘Trade Winds’ generally blowing in the afternoons. The winter is from November to April, during which the days are usually in the low 20s with occasional cold fronts making the temperatures drop and slowing the fishing to a small extent.
While in Hawaii, we can also organise guided fly fishing trips targeting Butterfly Peacock Bass in Lake Wilson located in Wahiawa. These Bass were first introduced to Hawaii in the early 1950s and offer the visiting fly-fishermen another wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the island. The best time to target Peacock Bass on Oahu is during the summer and into early fall months from May through to October.
Onboard, all fly gear can be provided for including rods, reels, lines and flies for your day in the water. Lunch, snacks and water are provided on all full-day charters.
As per all Fly Odyssey bookings, will provide a comprehensive & detailed pre-trip fly fishing guide, prior to your departure.
