NZ 2017 Report
In essence the Fly Odyssey New Zealand weeks are designed to offer anglers a fly fishing experience on several levels. Those who prefer to be guided are able to tap into the knowledge and expertise of local Kiwi guides. Conversely, intrepid rods who wish to explore the wilderness at their pace can do so under the watchful gaze of a more experienced angler.

Something else that makes the Odyssey trips so unique is the ability to remain adaptable in terms location. Despite careful planning and bookings, weather conditions will have the final word, even in the most exotic of destinations. Admittedly, the aim was to fish a clutch of rivers well known to the party, yet unprecedented rain dealt us a cruel hand of fate. As the rivers continued to rise, without hesitation, we upped sticks and drove to a drier, more settled region where the rivers ran clear. Of course, all the logistics where taken care of behind the scenes so we always had somewhere homely to rest our heads.

This move proved to be the making of our trip. Granted, high water elsewhere might have denied us the thrill of fishing more celebrated streams, but what we found instead was adventure on rivers where few cared to tread the upshot being unpressured trout that responded well to carefully placed flies. Naturally, this is made all the sweeter when your day unfolds without another soul in sight, apart from your angling buddy that is.
In some respects the inclement conditions played into our hands too. Cloudy days might not be perfect for stalking trout, but the damp weather certainly encouraged upwing flies to emerge. On several occasions, flurries of mayflies had trout on the fin, looking up for surface food. Rising trout remain a bonus anywhere, but when they run to several pounds puts the icing on the cake!

Nothing beats home comforts when you’re travelling, especially following a long day by the river. Yet, for some the notion of spending a night or two under canvas somehow completes the whole experience. Willing as ever, again Mat obliged when a few of us took off to more remote places. For me this escapism is what makes the Fly Odyssey weeks so special, that and linking up with friends who share similar values.
