Fly Fishing Cape York | Weipa, Australia

One of the final frontiers of fly fishing, The Cape York Peninsula is a remote region in Queensland, Northern Australia that’s home to an abundance of wildlife, including a remarkable fishery and species diversity found nowhere else in the world.

If you want to add as many captured species on fly as possible to your list, then the Cape York Peninsula is very hard to beat with 30 to 40 different species in a single week, not uncommon.Including Barramundi, Queenfish and Long Tail Tuna, it’s also home to Queenfish, Blue Bastards, Tusk Fish and the Indo-Pacific Permit.

Due to the region’s limited access, a short domestic flight from Cairns will have you on the ground with some great local guides and authentic accommodation, while you can also join some of our week-long mothership operations.

These live-aboard trips are a great way to explore a variety of rivers, flats, bays and coves and will maximise your fly fishing stay in the region.

Fly Fishing Cape York is generally from land based operations in Weipa or on Liveaboard Motherships which fish the entire eastern cape region from Weipa through to Mapoon and Siesa in the far north.

There are numerous accommodation options in Weipa, from comfortable self-catering and lodge style accommodation for larger groups, to basic resort style accommodation in air conditioned cabins by the waterfront.

Basic dining options in Weipa are available, with fresh seafood and the ability to get your catch cooked for you nightly, such as fresh Barramundi and of course when in the north – cold beer on tap.

There are several game boat and mothership operations that run dedicated fly fishing trips in season from March to November which typically cater for 6 anglers on 7 night / 6 day adventures. Thes trips provide bunk-style accommodation, and all meals with a dedicated chef including a great range of dining options, fresh salads, seafood and seasonal fruits from tropical north Queensland.

With protection from the prevailing south easterly winds for most of the year, and a multitude of pristine rivers and coastline for both light tackle sport-fishing and fly fishing, the range of species available is second to nowhere else in the country.

With more than fifty-five species of fish available on fly, clients have endless opportunities throughout the week. Home to a huge diversity of species such as Queenfish, GTs, Barramundi, Giant Herring, Golden Trevally, Permit, Milkfish, Spanish Mackerel, Grey Mackerel, Longtail Tuna to name but a few.

The option of chasing Cobia and Golden Trevally on the backs of Rays while polaroiding the beaches may appeal to some, while for others it might be locking horns with the infamous Blue Bastards, Permit and GTs which also roam the flats.

You can also explore the creeks and rivers for Mangrove Jack and Barramundi, or head out deeper for larger pelagic species such as Spanish Mackerel and Longtail Tuna on Fly.

As per all Fly Odyssey bookings, we will provide you with a comprehensive and detailed pre-trip fly fishing guide prior to departure.

Weipa, gateway to the western cape is situated on the eastern side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, and about two-thirds of the way up the western shore of Cape York. Daily commercial aircraft services make this small mining town one of the most accessible remote locations in Australia.
