Baja Mexico’s East Cape is one of the most prolific inshore and blue water fly fishing destinations in the world. Gentle seas, sandy beaches and fair weather make this the perfect setting for fly fishing.

The waters are also rich in nutrients, making them a fly fishing paradise for anglers seeking pelagic fish such as Sailfish, Striped Marlin, Black Marlin, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Jacks, Wahoo, Pacific Sailfish and Yellowtail Kingfish.

The majestic Roosterfish, which can be found from Peru and Costa Rica through to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, where they can be sight casted from the beach or from a skiff, in excess of fifty pounds in weight.

Fanning one of the most impressive dorsal fins in the fishing world the rooster comb consists of seven long spines which cut through the water as they heard sardines and mullet, creating a stunning display and a fish equal to any other when it comes to its cosmetic appeal.

They fight hard, and the ability of the angler to be able to run down the beach casting a fly in front of a moving roosterfish can also be a challenge in itself. The window of opportunity can often be a short one, so stamina and the ability to shoot long, accurate casts to these fickle fish are required in most situations, suitable for Intermediate to Advanced anglers.

Fishing can be excellent all-year round. The summer months from April through to September are best with your guides specialising in beach fishing from the comfort and combination of skiffs and ATV’s or Quad bikes which allows you to cover a lot of water each day.

The best action and conditions however for fly fishing comes in May, June, July, and again in October after the storms have past. Fair-weather settles into the area and an abundance of bait attracts migrating species like roosterfish, jacks, dorado, billfish, tuna and wahoo. During these summer months, you can anticipate a myriad of different species.

During May and the beginning of June, large roosterfish and dorado migrate into the area and will aggressively take a well-placed fly. As the season progresses, the larger roosterfish move off to deeper cooler water and become more cautious along the beaches. Although roosterfish continue to be abundant throughout the hot summer months offshore, they are not as prevalent on the flats.

A range of species in the bluewater include tuna, mahi mahi, roosterfish, jacks as well as billfish. However, if your goal is to land a roosterfish on fly, from the beach, then this is the place to do it!
